Will writing software
Will writing software is a professional drafting system that produces wills and related estate planning documents from structured answers rather than from an edited word-processor template, assembling and validating the correct clauses automatically.
Will writing software is a professional drafting system that produces wills and related estate planning documents from structured answers rather than from a word-processor template someone edits by hand. The practitioner answers questions about the client's family, assets and intentions; the software selects and assembles the correct clauses, checks them against one another, and outputs a finished document.
What separates it from a Word template#
A precedent bank in Word is a library of documents you copy and amend. It works, and most practitioners start there. Its three failures are consistent:
- Nothing checks the document against itself. An asset given away twice, an executor appointed but never named, a guardian with no substitute — none of it is caught.
- You maintain it. When the law moves or the Office of the Public Guardian reissues a form, updating every precedent is your job, and it is the job that quietly does not get done.
- It drifts. Two practitioners in the same firm amend the same precedent differently for two years.
What professional systems typically include#
- Guided drafting for wills, including mirror wills and testamentary trusts
- Lasting Powers of Attorney, both types
- Trusts — property protection, life interest, discretionary
- Letters of wishes and severance of joint tenancy
- Validation before the document leaves the drafter
- A client record, to a greater or lesser degree
- A maintained clause library, updated by the provider
Not the same as a consumer will website#
Consumer services produce one document for the person filling in the form. Professional will writing software is used by a practitioner, for many clients, and assumes professional judgement is being applied. The two are often confused in search results and they are entirely different products.
What it costs in the UK#
Between roughly £5 and £180 per user per month in September 2026, depending heavily on the pricing model — flat practice pricing, per-user, document packs and per-case pricing are all in use. See what will writing software actually costs.
